Mind Over Matter

Empowering Students Through Science and Yoga

On April 10, 2025, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology (MGIT) in Hyderabad hosted a vital session titled “Socio-Emotional Stress in Students: A Neurobiological Perspective”. Presented under the Vishnu Wellness initiative, the event addressed the complex mental and emotional landscapes students navigate today.+2

The session was led by Dr. P. Nagaraju, an academician, wellness coach, and yoga therapist. By blending neurobiological insights with practical wellness strategies, Dr. Nagaraju provided a holistic roadmap for managing academic and social pressures.+4

Identifying “Emotional Pathogens”

A key highlight of the lecture was the identification of “Emotional Pathogens”—negative mental states that can impact physical health. Dr. Nagaraju discussed how various factors can disrupt a student’s well-being:

  • Chronic Stress: Constant pressure that can weaken the immune system.
  • Anxiety and Depression: Mental health conditions that significantly impact physical health.
  • Unhealthy Beliefs: Self-sabotaging thoughts that contribute to poor health outcomes.
  • Resentment and Anger: Negative emotions that take a toll on both mind and body.
  • Guilt and Shame: Emotions that can lead to self-destructive behaviors.

A Collaborative Effort for Wellness

The event saw an impressive turnout, with 285 students and 10 faculty members participating in the auditorium session. Dr. Nagaraju was joined by dedicated Vishnu Wellness Ambassadors, including Miss Shreeja and Miss Tarani, both 2nd-year Pharmaceutical Engineering students.+2

Special thanks were extended to the MGIT leadership, including the Principal, Dr. Reddy (HoD of CSE), Dr. Satish, and Mr. Venkanna, for their commitment to student mental health and for inviting the Vishnu Wellness team to share these life-changing insights.

Take Charge of Your Well-being

This session serves as a reminder that mental health is a priority. By understanding the science of stress and adopting simple mindfulness practices, students can improve their learning efficiency and overall quality of life.
